Mitchell Marsh 77 leads Australia to T20 World Cup win with dominant display over New Zealand

Australia T20 world cup final

A dominant all round display from Australia has lead them to become their first ever side to win the T20 World Cup despite a classy display by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

A brilliant bowling display by Josh Hazelwood, taking three wickets for 16 runs from just four overs, put Australia in good stead come the half ay point of the game, as well as Adam Zampa, who continued his ‘Player of the tournament’ form going for only 26 off four overs, while also taking a wicket.

Williamson gave New Zealand some hope with a beautiful 85, hitting all round the field and looked seemingly unstoppable, until a Hazelwood ball, who had previously dropped him in the 20’s, tempted him in while trying to build the run tally and he was caught by Steve Smith.

But it was the Australian batting performance that truly displayed their class and dominance.

Opener David Warner played a fantastic 53, making sure he stayed in after captain Aaron Finch was dismissed for just five, after his duck in the semi-final.

Then Warner and Marsh built up a ruthless partnership that looked to take the fight out of the Kiwis, with Marsh constantly finding the gaps, and often riding his luck with some balls falling just short of the fielder numerous times.

Once Warner was dismissed it was time for another partnership to be built between Marsh and Glenn Maxwell, who found gaps and boundaries with ease and Maxwell hit the winning runs with a switch hit down leg side to cue Warner and Finch’s roaring celebrations.

Justin Langer and his side have certainly faced their fare share of criticism over the least year for their form throughout the year, but this will silence those that felt he should be relieved of his position.

Now Australia will look forwards to the Ashes, where they face an England side who were knocked out in the semi-finals of this tournament, albeit a different squad. The Australians look in good form for that Ashes series due to a number of that squad featuring members of this T20 squad.
